Serif Software
This article is now archived. Please visit the Install a Serif product with logging enabled (CD/DVD) tutorial on CommunityPlus for an updated version.

Applies To: Any Serif product

If you have encountered a problem when installing your Serif product and the installer did not automatically create an install log for the error, Serif Technical Support may need you to provide an install log to help diagnose the problem. There are two different methods available to create an install log; Method 1 only works on newer installs so if it does not work then try Method 2 instead, as instructed below.

Method 1
  1. Put the Serif product CD/DVD into your computer's CD/DVD drive
  2. On Windows Vista, Windows 7 or any newer version of Windows, go to Start > Computer
On Windows XP or below, go to Start > My Computer
  3. Right-click on the drive containing the CD/DVD and choose Open
  4. A window will open showing the contents of the CD/DVD
  5. Find the setup.exe file on the CD/DVD
  6. Hold the Ctrl key on the keyboard (do not release it until after you get to step 9 below) and at the same time, double-click the setup.exe file on the CD/DVD
  7. If you now see a menu like the one below asking you which product you would like to install, click on the product that you want to create an install log for (still holding Ctrl)

  8. If you now see a User Account Control (UAC) prompt like the one below, click Yes (still holding Ctrl)

  9. Continue to hold the Ctrl key until you see a "Save As" window appear, once it appears you can release the Ctrl key.
Note: If no "Save As" dialog appears and you were definitely holding the Ctrl key from step 6 through to step 9, please skip the rest of Method 1 and use Method 2 (below) instead.
  10. Choose where to save the log file, e.g. your Desktop or Documents folder
  11. After you click Save, the install will begin.
  12. Let the install run as far as it can until it reaches the problem that you are experiencing and then finishes
  13. Find the log in the location that you chose in step 9 - attach the file to the email or Support Ticket that you send to Serif Technical Support relating to your install problem.

Method 2
  1. Put the Serif product CD/DVD into your computer's CD/DVD drive
  2. On Windows Vista, Windows 7 or any newer version of Windows, go to Start > Computer
On Windows XP or below, go to Start > My Computer
  3. Make note of the letter of the drive that the CD/DVD is in. In the example below, the CD/DVD is in drive D:

  4. Right-click on the drive containing the CD/DVD and choose Open
  5. A window will open showing the contents of the CD/DVD
  6. Make note of the MSI file name. In the example below, the MSI file is called Serif PagePlus X4.msi

  7. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories
  8. On Windows Vista, Windows 7 or any newer version of Windows, right-click on Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator
On Windows XP or below, left click on Command Prompt
  9. A command prompt window will open
  10. In the command prompt window, type the text as shown below (including the quote marks) ensuring that you replace the text in orange with the drive letter you noted in step 3 and the MSI file name you noted in step 6:
    msiexec /i "D:\Serif PagePlus X4.msi" transforms=:setup.mst /L*V C:\log.txt
  11. The install for your Serif product will now begin, until it reaches the error and finishes.
  12. On Windows Vista, Windows 7 or any newer version of Windows, go to Start > Computer
On Windows XP or below, go to Start > My Computer
  13. Double-click on your C: drive to open it
  14. There will be a file on the C: drive called log.txt - attach this file to the email or Support Ticket that you send to Serif Technical Support relating to your install problem.
