How do I backup my WebPlus site

Users can adopt several strategies for backing up their WebPlus sites. The site is a single file (with .wpp extension) that contains all your pages and designs; it is published to the Internet as separate HTML files for it to be viewed by web visitors.

Each strategy focuses on backing up the WebPlus site as opposed to its published HTML output.

Backup using backup software

Most computer users make use of dedicated backup software to secure their computer assets. It's normally possible to set up an automated backup regime to do this, which should encompass your WebPlus project.

Backup to a different computer drive

This is a manual method for backing up your WebPlus site, by copying it from one drive to another. However, if you use a partitioned computer drive this will not secure against disk failure. It is recommended that you copy/paste between physical computer drives only!

Note: Any resources (pictures, graphics, etc.) which are linked will not be included with your WebPlus file on backup. Use Resource Manager to review which resources are linked and embedded.

Backup via email

WebPlus comes complete with a Send Document feature which allows you to attach the currently open project to an email window of your default email program. You can send it to your online Email account (e.g., Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.) for safe keeping. 

To backup via email:

  • From the File menu, select Send Document....

Backup/restore to your web space on publishing

Your WebPlus site (.wpp) can be optionally uploaded as you publish to the Internet. This means the file can be restored via WebPlus in the unfortunate event of computer failure or theft.

To backup your file to your web space:

  1. From the Standard toolbar, select Publish site.
    From the File menu, select Publish site>Publish to Web.
  2. Select your website's FTP account from the drop-down list.
  3. Check Back-up the document to the remote server.
  4. Click OK. The site is published to the Internet, including your WebPlus file.

No backup is useful without the ability to restore. WebPlus lets you download the backed-up file using its Maintain Website feature.

To restore your WebPlus file:

  1. From the Standard toolbar, click Publish site>Maintain website....
  2. Select your website's FTP account from the drop-down list.
  3. Click Maintain.
  4. Once connected to your website, select the WebPlus .wpp file in the upper-right pane. The file is stored in the root folder.
  5. Click the Download from server button.
  6. Choose a folder to save the file to.
  7. Click OK. Your file is downloaded to your chosen folder.
